    They’re going to want something original but there’s no reason you can’t be influenced by songs. Go to towerrecords.com and look at oldies box sets by category like doo-wop, soul, nuggets, etc and listen to the 30-second clips. A lot of great modern songs are influenced by what was done before. Listen to the guitar chords, etc. You should get some good ideas. best of luck!
