If you are Linux-based there are several free suites (packages). I'm awed by a program called Rosegarden. In Linux it is better to use a hardware synthesizer working the phases. I think Rosegarden is available for PC also (not sure). Rosegarden also prints sheet music and plays sheet music. My gripe is Rosegarden included too much in that package. I wished you could fire up modules instead of the "whole ball of wax". After the composing phase there are many packages, free, that let you multi-track a recording. The thing is: you have to get a little bit familiar with the terminology, things like ".midi", .mp3 and analog vs. digital.

If you're PC-based, it is my opinion you will be better off buying commercial packages. And, again, Linux-based means there are installation and configuration issues.

The company that has consistently "wowed" me with audio is Creative Labs. But, as far as digital music, as they teach it in higher-levels of music classes, I have been impressed with Rosegarden.

Download FL Studio. If you go to there site (flstudio.com) you can download a trial version for free to see if you like it. If you like it enough you can go through the trouble of downloading a crack for it from limewire, or you can just pay for it. Its a really good program for what your looking for i think.
